Get Measured Right, Wear It Proud

Your kilt should feel like it was made just for you—because it was. Follow our simple measuring steps and avoid awkward fits or length surprises. It’s easier than it sounds, and yep, we’ve got your back if you’re not sure.

Waist Size

Start with your waist—right around your navel is the sweet spot. Not your hips, and definitely not where your jeans usually sit. You’ll want the tape measure snug, not loose. This usually ends up being about 2 inches above your hip bone. It might feel a bit high at first, but trust the process—it’s the traditional kilt fit.

Hip / Seat Size (Optional)

This one’s optional, but if you’re going for a more tailored fit, it helps. Stand with your feet together and measure around the widest part of your hips or seat. Make sure your pockets are empty (phones and keys will throw this off). Again, optional—but good to include if you’re unsure.

Fell Measurement (Optional)

Another optional one. The fell is just the distance from your waist down to the fullest part of your hips—the spot where you took the hip measurement. Basically, it’s halfway down the upper part of your kilt. Not everyone includes this, but it can help with the hang of the pleats if you want a precise look.

Kilt Length

Now the important bit—length. The easiest way? Kneel on the floor, then measure from the ground up to your belly button. That’s it.
Kilts are meant to sit at the knee—or just a touch above. If yours comes in a bit shorter or longer than what the chart says below, don’t panic. Some of it’s personal preference, some of it’s just your body proportions.

Here’s a general guide to help double-check:

  • Height 5’6″ to 5’7″ → Kilt length: 22″ to 22.5″
  • Height 5’8″ to 5’9″ → Kilt length: 23″ to 23.5″
  • Height 5’10” to 5’11” → Kilt length: 24″ to 24.5″
  • Height 6’0″ to 6’2″ → Kilt length: 24.5″ to 25.5″
  • Height 6’3″ to 6’4″ → Kilt length: 26″ to 26.5″
  • Height 6’5″ to 6’7″ → Kilt length: 27″ to 27.5″

Waist:
Waist measurements should be taken at the navel level and the measurement must be tight. This is usually taken 2 inches higher than your hip bone or higher from where your trousers are usually worn.
Hip Or Seat:
Please put your feet together, then measure the broadest part of your hips. Ensure that your pockets are empty! It’s not necessary.
Fell Measurement:
This measurement should be halfway between the waist and seat (bottom). The fell is the distance from the waistline to the hip measurement line.
Kilt Length:
Please kneel on the ground, place the tape on the floor then measure up to your belly button. Remember that kilts shouldn’t be worn too long!

✅ Tip to Make Your Kilt Fit Perfectly:

Don’t measure over clothes—especially bulky ones. Use a flexible tape, stand tall, and double-check your numbers (maybe even get a friend to help). If your kilt sits too low or drops past your knees, it’s probably just a half-inch off. Small adjustments make a big difference.
